Unit 1

Topic 1: Create a new Docs on Google Classroom (Communications Technology 7). Recreate (and answer) this worksheet. [15 marks - DUE SEP 15]

COMPLETE ONLY  THREE(3) OF THE ITEMS FROM TOPIC 2 (A, B, C,  D and/or E)

Topic 2(A): Create a simple web page that looks like the image below. Copy and paste your code into Google Docs. (Lose your handout?  Check out this file on HTML) [5 marks - DUE SEP 30]

Topic 2(B):  Use Microsoft Paint to draw an apple.  The apple should be red and have a brown stem sticking off the top with a small, light green, leaf. Add a border on all sides and an information box with a title, your name,course name, and date in the bottom right-hand corner. Save your image on the H;\ drive, but also upload the image to Google Classroom. [5 marks - DUE OCT 10]

Topic 2(C): Use Google Sketchup (found on your Desktop) to create a small cabin with a peaked roof. Add your name to the cabin (View, Toolbars, check "Large Tool Set". Click on the "A" tool to add text). Upload a screen capture of your house to Google Classroom. (Tutorial #1, Tutorial #2, Tutorial #3) [5 marks - DUE OCT 20]

Topic 2(D): Use your Google Sketchup cabin from the previous step and make a movie (mp4 file). Upload your movie to YouTube and paste the link into Google Classroom. [5 marks - OCT 30]

Sketchup Animation
To make an animation in Sketchup, click Window, Default Tray, Scenes. Then, position your view and click on the + (plus) icon.  Re-position your view again and click + again to save another camera position.  Repeat this process until your animation is just the way you want it.

Sketchup Video (MP4)
To export a video, click File, Export, Animation, Video.  Choose mp4 as the "Export type".  Be sure to save all files to your H:\ drive.

Topic 2(E): Use your Smart Phone to capture a video of yourself saying: "Hi.  My name is [NAME] and I am from [BIRTH PLACE].  My favourite colour is [COLOUR] and my favourite animal is a [ANIMAL]."  E-mail the video to yourself. Edit it with Microsoft Movie Maker.  Add a beginning title and a closing credit.  Compile or export your video as an MP4 file (click the "Save Movie" button at the top right). Upload this video to YouTube. Paste the link into Google Classroom. [5 marks - DUE NOV 10]

Topic 3: Students need to know the terms (see the numbered list below).  Students will listen to a mini-lecture and complete a simple quiz.  Students also need to know the difference between DIGITAL and ANALOG. [20 marks - DUE NOV 20]

Topic 4: Technology will be with us for our whole lives.  Describe how telephones / cell phones / flip phones / smart phones have changed over time.  Please include pictures. Create new Docs inside Google Classroom. [8 marks - DUE NOV 30]

Topic 5:
  Draw a picture on a regular sheet of paper.  Draw a border around the page, 1 cm from the left, top and bottom, but 2 cm from the right.  In the bottom corner, draw an information box that includes 1) a title, 2) your name, 3) the date, and 4) the course name (Communication 7).  The students must have ONE(1) isometric image and THREE(3) orthographic images of the same object.  Scan this image (use the teacher computer).  Upload the image to Google Classroom. [13 marks - DUE DEC 10]

Topic 6: The main activities related to this topic will be deferred until students cover the Basic Skills Topic 4: Creating Documents. [NO MARKS GIVEN AT THIS TIME]

Topic 7: Students use Microsoft Paint to re-draw the following 8-Step Design Process.  Then, create new Docs inside Google Classroom to import your drawing and add 8  sentences that explain how cars are manufactured. [8 marks - DUE DEC 20]

Topic 8: Students should know that a good (reputable) web site has the following information: (A) an author, (B) an associated corporation or institution name, and (C) a date of publication.  Students must also be aware of stealing information (plagiarism).  Students should also be careful of FAKE NEWS. Passing off someone's work as their own is illegal and unethical.  Credit must always be given to the original author of the work by way of reference or citation. [12 marks - DUE JAN 15]

 Watch the "House Hippo Commercial" video (at right ). Answer these questions in Google Classroom (Google Docs):

1. Do you believe everything you see on TV or the Internet? Why?

2. Why is it important for advertisers to be truthful?

3. Define: 'Ethical'

4. Why is it unethical for you to copy from someone else?

UNIT 2

Topic 1: Communication Graphics - Sketches and Simple technical Drawings.  Students must submit ONE(1) isometric drawing with FOUR(4) orthographic views.  Suggested objects to draw are: (A) family car, (B) favourite jeep, (C) tallest building student has ever seen, (D) family house, (E) quad, (F) skidoo.  This drawing must be scanned and saved to the student's Google Drive. [10 marks - DUE JAN 30]

Topic 2: Communications Media - Images, Audio and Video.  Students must create ONE(1) MP4 video, 30 seconds in length of a "rant".  The student must complain or make fun of ONE(1) communications problem: (A) cell phone does not keep its charge, (B) people are too loud, (C) car alarms are noise pollution, (D) the school's wifi is too slow, (E) "Do people ever really understand one another?"  Students may use Microsoft Movie Maker to add beginning title and a closing credit to their rant.  To export as an MP4, click Home, Save Movie, For Computer, MP4 (Save to the local Video folder). You don't need to show your face (but I do need to hear your voice). [DUE IN NEXT STEP]

Topic 3 & 4: Document Creation - "Create" "Slides".  Add your digital freehand sketch (from Unit 2, Topic 1).  Then, upload your video (from Unit2,  Topic 2) to YouTube and "link" that videoto your slide presentation too. [5 marks - DUE FEB 15]

Unit 3

Topic 1: Using Google Classroom (use the same code as in Unit 2 above), create "Slides".  Share this slide show with your assigned partner so that you can both edit. Your first slide should be the title ("Unit 3 - 8-Step Communication Design Process by [GROUP MEMBER NAMES]").  Your second slide should be called "Topic 1: The Design Team".  Answer the following questions in your journal (see Google Classroom - Daily Log) [8 marks]:

(A) Why is it important to share responsibilities and ideas in your design team?

(B) Why is it important for both team members to participate?

(C) Why is it important for both partners to take the lead at different times?

Topic 2: Add to your main slide show the title "Topic 2: Identification of The Problem".  You and your partner discuss and decide which ONE(1) of the following "opportunities" to choose from.  Restate the problem and why your team chose it [3 marks - DUE MARCH 1]:

   (A) Confusing Corridors - Some Grade 6 students find the floor plan of Xavier very confusing when they first get here in September. Teach kids how to get around.

    (B) Camcorder Control - Some students find using a video camera very hard.  Teach them in how to use the camera.

    (C) Complex Code - Some students find learning HTML very difficult.  Teach basic HTML tags, HTML tables and basic CSS (Cascading Style Sheets).

    (D) Crafting Coordinates - Some students find it very difficult to draw.  Teach these students how draw freehand.

    (E) Code of Conduct - Some students just do not understand rules and can be very rude.  Using a communications solution, teach these unruly students the basics about being a good student here at Xavier.  How should they behave toward others?  How can a person get organization skills? Study skills?  Time management skills?

              OR

    (F) Conditional - [CHOOSE YOUR OWN PROBLEM - Take an interest survey.]

        - Teach someone how to get into hockey? Skateboarding? Running? Bicycling?

        - Cat or dog tricks?

        - How to...? Make cookies? Chose clothes that suits you? 

Topic 3: Add to your main slide show the title "Topic 3: Design Brief" [10 marks - DUE MARCH 10]:

    (A) State the specific problem (one sentence)

    (B) Criteria (What are some conditions and limitations to your solution? SEE "CHANGING OIL IN A CAR" BELOW)

    (C) State the expectations (What will your communications solution accomplish?)

    (D) What tasks are you and your partner's expected to perform? 

Topic 4: Add to your main slide show the title "Topic 4: Research & Investigation". Find pictures, information, bulleted lists, diagrams, sketches, ideas, video or other data related to your solution that can help you make your communications solution.  Re-post at least FIVE(5) of those ideas for this section [10 marks - DUE MARCH 20].


Topic 5: Add to your main slide show the title "Topic 5: Identification of Possible Solutions".  What is the best way to deliver your communications solution?  A paper?  A lecture?  A slide show?  A video? An interpretive dance? A song?  Evaluate the best THREE(3) ways to present and explain each one [6 marks - DUE APRIL 1]


Topic 6: Add to your main slide show the title "Topic 6: Selection of The Best Solution".  Create a table with your expectations (from Topic 3C) and a list of your three solutions (from Topic 5).  Evaluate each solution with all your expectations out of a score of 5 (best) to 1 (worst).  Which was your best solution idea from Topic 5?  Why? [5 marks - APRIL 10]


Topic 7: Create your communications solution. [30% of the whole course].  Add a new slide with the title "Topic 7: Development".  Take pictures of you and your partner and your work area during this topic and post the pictures to your main slide show [5 marks - MAY 15].


Topic 8: Add to your main slide show the title "Topic 8: Evaluation".  How well did you do with your solution?  Use your expectations from Topic 3 and evaluate each out of 3 (excellent), 2 (good) or 1 (poor).  What grade did you give to solution? [5 marks - DUE MAY 30]
